A bill proposed for the 2018 legislative session wants to stop Florida residents from buying soda with food stamps.
The bill, HB 47, was filed by Rep. Ralph Massullo, a dermatologist from Lecanto.
The proposed bill would direct the Florida Department of Children and Families to seek approval of a federal waiver that would allow the state to ban the use of SNAP to buy soft drinks.
With SNAP, households can use the benefits to buy breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, poultry, diary, and plants and seed to grow food. Households can't use the benefits to buy nonfood items like pet foods, soaps, paper products, household supplies, grooming items, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vitamins, medicines, food to eat in the store, or hot foods.
