[Australia] IFN 11-16 ; Adding a profile question for brown seaweed under tariff code 1212.12 (2016-08-31)
  • Registration Date 2016-09-01
  • Hit 641

Purpose

The purpose of this notice is to advise brokers and importers of seaweed about upcoming changes to the profile question for seaweed.

What has changed?

From 7 September 2016, the following Community Protection (CP) question will be applied to goods lodged in the ICS under tariff code 1212.21: Seaweeds and other algae: Fit for human consumption:

IFIS: ARE THE GOODS SEAWEED OF THE PHYOPHYCEAE / PHAEOPHYCEAE CLASS (BROWN SEAWEED)?

Due to Biosecurity requirements (as per BICON), the scientific names of seaweed are already required as a condition of import. The department anticipates that brokers will be able to respond to the question based on the information already available.

This change will significantly reduce the over-referral of other types of seaweed to the Imported Food Inspection Scheme that are not classified as a risk food.
